"Can ultrasounds during pregnancy cause autism
(NaturalHealth365) According to the Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine, ultrasound is a form of energy with effects in the tissues it traverses. Essentially, this energy (sound waves) can deform cells and of most concern are the cells associated with the formation of the cortex in the brain.
The journal states that ultrasound should be restricted to medical indications, by trained professionals, for as short a period and as low an intensity as compatible with accurate diagnosis.
Neurologist Dr. Manuel Casanova, at the University of Louisville, has been researching a possible link between ultrasounds and autism and believes there is a connection. Dr. Casanova states…
“Many people consider ultrasound taking a pretty picture. But really it’s invasive sound waves that have effects on cells within the body. If not used properly it can be harmful.”
Having a grandson with autism has led Dr. Casanova to explore the link between ultrasound and autism and he states that the FDA deregulated ultrasound in the early 90’s, allowing seven to eight times more energy to be used in the scans; mainly due to the obesity epidemic in this country. But, he states that since the deregulation, the number of cases of autism have continued to climb.
Dr. Casanova believes, in normal pregnancies, ultrasounds should not be used at all and only used sparingly in high risk pregnancies.
Studies demonstrate concern for the overuse of ultrasounds
Early studies show cause for concern and demonstrate the subtle neurological damage linked to ultrasounds. One study demonstrated an increased incidence in left-handedness in boys (an indication of a brain problem when not hereditary) and speech delays.
In 2006, Yale School of Medicine’s Department of Neurobiology released the results of a study where pregnant mice were given ultrasounds of various durations. The brains of the baby mice showed damage consistent with that of autism. NIH funded research associated ultrasounds with neurodevelopmental problems such as dyslexia, epilepsy, retardation and schizophrenia in children.
Keep in mind, the longer the exposure to radiation the greater the damage to brain cells.
The Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders published a study stating that ultrasounds were unlikely linked to autism. They did however state that studies examining subgroups still needed to be conducted.
A warning about ‘Keepsake’ ultrasound videos and images
According to the FDA, ‘keepsake’ ultrasound video and images should be avoided. They state that performing prenatal ultrasounds without medical oversight can put the mother and unborn baby at risk. There is absolutely no medical benefit derived from the exposure and there is no control over how long the session will take.
FDA physicist Robert Phillips, Ph.D. states “Performing prenatal ultrasounds without medical oversight may put a mother and her unborn baby at risk. The bottom line is: Why take a chance with your baby’s health for the sake of a video?”
Sound the alarm about “ultrasound transducer error rates”
A study conducted in Sweden assessed ultrasound transducer error rates. On average 40% of transducers were defective and all companies had a minimum of 20% error rates. Obviously, it is necessary for diagnostic purposes that ultrasound machines perform as anticipated, however with faulty transducers, the technician may not be accurate gauging exposure levels.
Children find relief using CEASE therapy
In my practice, many children have been helped by the CEASE protocol and when ultrasound has been an issue for the child, we see gains after incorporating the homeopathic remedy ‘ultrasound’.
