They should stop "requesting" and start demanding... but it's good to know they are concerned enough to act.

"On Monday, March 12, 45 Representatives and 10 Senators signed a letter to the FDA in support of a legal petition from the Center for Food Safety requesting mandatory labeling of genetically engineered food. The letter was drafted primarily by Sen. Barbara Boxer (CA) and Rep. Peter DeFazio (OR). It was quite direct, and not aimed at finding fault with GMOs but that consumers deserve the right to know and make informed decisions for themselves.

It reads,”As you know, in its 1992 policy statement, FDA allowed GE foods to be marketed without labeling because they were not “materially” different from other foods. In that policy statement, the agency severely limited what it considered “material” to only changes in fòod that could be recognized by taste, smell, or other senses. The use of novel food technologies like genetic engineering on a commercial scale has so far slipped underneath FDA’s limited threshold for ”materiality” because such technologies make silent genetic, and molecular changes to food that are not capable of being detected by human senses. In its 2009 guidance to industry, FDA applied its outdated GE food labeling policy to GE animals without revisiting the scientific or legal merits of the standard.”

GMOs are crops that are genetically engineered by scientists in ways that could not occur in nature, most commonly to be resistant to certain herbicides such as Monsanto’s RoundUp(glyphosate) or to produce pesticides by inserting bacterial DNA into the plant. Genetic engineered food has been found in many studies to be toxic and damaging to the liver and kidneys, despite industry claims that their transgenic crops and herbicides are “almost completely safe”. It is also a major issue in the environmental and sustainability movements because these crops are so widespread in some countries that they are creating resistant “superweeds” and “superpests”, and they also cross pollinate with conventional, organic, and heirloom plants; polluting the gene pool and destroying biodiversity.

The petition from the Center for Food Safety is supported by more than 400 businesses and organizations and has collected more than 1 million comments since it entered circulation last October.
